BMW E36 M3 with HG Design Full Roll Cage

Brandon Watson is a BMWCCA Instructor, Street Survival Instructor, and was preparing to take his experience behind the wheel into competition through BMWCCA Club Racing and NASA GTS. To move his E36 into true “wheel-to-wheel” competition, the vehicle required a full roll cage that met the specific requirements of both his I Prepared class and NASA GTS rules.
Brandon came to HG Performance looking for more than a basic roll cage. He needed a properly engineered solution that would meet the required competition specifications while integrating cleanly into the E36 chassis and providing the protection and rigidity expected from a serious track car.
Our solution was an 8.5-point full roll cage constructed from 1 3/4-inch .095 DOM tubing. The entire cage was designed and fabricated in-house, with TIG welding used throughout the fabrication process. The finished design incorporates a main hoop with a diagonal brace and harness bar, rear vertical bars, an A-pillar bar with knee bar, “X” style door bars with clamshell gussets, “A” frame rear auxiliary supports, and anti-foot-intrusion bars.
Beyond the safety benefits, the addition of the cage made a noticeable difference in the overall character of the car. The increased chassis rigidity delivered sharper response and more direct feedback, allowing Brandon to better understand what the car was doing as he pushed it harder on track.
That added feedback, combined with the confidence provided by the properly engineered cage, allowed Brandon to explore the vehicle’s limits with greater confidence. On his first drive after the cage was completed, he achieved a personal-best lap time at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway—a strong result that demonstrated the impact of the completed build.
